Mallard
(Anas platyrhyncha platyrhyncha)
The Mallard Duck is a resident 58cm long. Diet is almost anything, worms, slugs, snails, insects, shellfish, frogs, grain and berries. The hen lays 8 to 14 olive white or pale green eggs in May. The nest is of grass and other vegetation and down; on the ground at the edge of a lake or marsh, hidden by herbage, or in a wood. The duck usually covers the eggs with down, leaves or grass before she leaves them.
