Green Woodpecker

(Picus viridis pluvius)

The The Green Woodpecker is a resident 32cm long. Diet is mainly insects, many grubs and beetles. When insect food is in short supply it will eat, berries, nuts and fruit. It loves ants and will leave the tree in order to discover ant nests. The hen lays 4 to 7 white eggs, between April - May. The nest is a hole in a tree, usually in decaying wood.
